シルクという素材を命として扱うために、繭の中に入っていた蚕蛾一匹一匹に名前をつけていった。

人々を太古の昔から魅了してやまないシルクという美しい素材は「蚕」と言われる蛾の繭から作られる素材である。
そのことは万人にも知られていることなのだが、本当の意味でそのことを意識しながらシルク製のスカーフや服を使ったり、着ている人は多くはないだろう。
私はシルク製の服を美しいと言って着るのに、虫が飛んでくると叫び声を上げる人たちに、違和感を感じてしまう。いつから人間は見たくないものに蓋をして、都合のいい情報だけを身の回りに置いて生活をするようになってしまったのだろうか。
群馬県立近代美術館で展示した「NAMING」は、約50gの重さの１枚のストールに使われている100匹分の「蚕」の作り出す素材を命として認識するための作品である。
To treat the material called silk as life, I have named each silkworm/moth inside the cocoon.

The beautiful material of silk, which has fascinated people since ancient times, is a material made from moth cocoons called “silk moths”. It’s known to everyone, but not many people use or wear silk scarves and clothes with that in mind. I wear silk clothes as beautiful, but I feel uncomfortable with people who scream when insects fly. When did humans start to cover things they didn’t want to see and put only convenient information around them in their daily lives?
“NAMING”, which was exhibited at The Museum of Modern Art, Gunma, is a work to recognize as life the material produced by 100 “silkworms” used for a piece of stole weighing about 50g.
